The oldest distillery in Gascony
The estate owns the oldest distillery in Gascony.
We know that production and distillation is made in Ognoas since 1780 but the first written about distillery are from 1830.
In 1841, 43 new trays in cooper were bought so as to make the "vis d'Archimède", what we call the "helix". This way of distilling has stayed the same.
In the second middle of the XIX century, the Ognoas distillery was improved with Sier technology : trays in "spider foot". It allows "paddling" of alcohol vapour and heated wine.
The Ognoas distillery is one of those built, in Armagnac region, during the first years of XIX century, using the technical of continuous distilling, taking advantage of scientific discoveries of the end of the Age of Enlightenment.
The distillery still working and the regular use had needed various transformations while keeping the traditional distilling.
Every year, approximately 800 hectoliters of wine are distilled, supplying 150 hectoliters of armagnac which ages for at least 10 years and as much 40 years in the oak barrels from the estate.
The "Commission Départementale des antiquités et objets d'Arts" of Landes region included the Ognoas distillery, in 2004, at the inventory of Historic Buildings.
